My objective when going into this project was very general, to be able to successfully complete a hand drawn animation that I could be proud of. I wanted the scene to have “trippy” elements but include some symbolism with deeper meanings. Filming the before and after scenes proved to be a bit more difficult than I anticipated. Having to communicate what kind of expressions I wanted from my friends and getting them to say the proper lines was something I had never done before and gave me a newfound appreciation for the abilities of directors. Additionally, actually creating the animation was one of the more time consuming projects I have ever delved into in my entire life, and the animation itself only amounted to about 50 seconds. My animation starts off as if you are waking up in an animation and you look down at your hands and they aren’t your real hands anymore. It then proceeds into a whole array of trippy scenes. It ends with the main character having an overwhelming moment and reflecting on what she has just experienced. Movement was very important for me when composing this. I wanted each scene’s transition to be relatively seamless. Some of the symbols I used in my piece include eyes, growth, buck deer, fire, shaving, tears, and different colors. I connected each of these symbols to things my friend, who was the subject of my animation, has grappled with in the past, basically making it a story about her! Overall, I’m extremely happy with how my project turned out and I’m grateful for this project for pushing me to try animation and see what it is actually like. I can confidently say that I will never look at animated films or tv shows the same again!
